Avenues for Homeless Youth

Avenues partners with youth experiencing homelessness to achieve their dreams.

For 25 years, Avenues has supported youth ages 16-24 in Hennepin County. Whether a young person needs someplace to stay for just one night, or a year and a half, Avenues empowers youth to find their path out of homelessness. We do that by providing a stable home, building trusting relationships, and navigating the youth’s education, career, health and wellness and housing goals.

At Avenues, we believe:

  • Homelessness does not define a person. It is just one part of a journey that we are here to help young people navigate.
  • All youth experiencing homelessness have or are experiencing trauma. Therefore, mental health is at the center of all our work.
  • There is no one reason why youth experience homelessness – it’s intersectional. Systems of oppression, racism and poverty are of the root causes of homelessness. Without addressing these systems, homelessness will persist.
  • Youth are resilient, inspiring, and the drivers of their own journey. With stability, trust and youth-centered supports, their dreams can become reality.

Avenues work is guided by the 9 Evidence-based, Guiding Principles to Help Youth Overcome Homeless and our core values: equity, community, respect and dignity, trust, liberation and anti-oppression.

Back to College

Going back to college as an adult can be a daunting (sometimes even scary), but very worthwhile experience. We all know that there are many talented and accomplished individuals who never went to college or for some reason or another were not able to complete their degree. For many, earning that “piece of paper” can make a significant difference in their professional or personal life (the achievement of a lifelong dream) – but the idea of returning to school after a long absence can present quite a challenge.

Often adults who are returning to school after years of not being in a classroom are apprehensive about not fitting in (for example, being thrust into a classroom with 18 to 25 year olds), taking good notes, studying, and doing well on tests. The admissions and financial aid process can be a confusing and frustrating experience. Back to College® offers a directory of resources and interactive community specifically designed to help manage these challenges, including an Ask the Experts and online discussion forum.

Cornerstone

Our Mission

Cornerstone’s continuum of service helps to create communities where individuals and families are safe and children thrive. We advocate, educate and lead the way to social change.

Our Goal

Cornerstone’s ultimate goal is to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking and general crime. Safe and stable futures are possible when we coordinate an effective crisis response, implement trauma-informed support services, mitigate the impact of violence on children and youth, and confront the roots of violence.

Our Philosophy

We are committed to a society in which violence in families and relationships no longer exists. Domestic violence, sexual violence, dating violence and human trafficking are crimes. They are a violation of human rights. The use of violence is a choice and can be prevented. All community members have a responsibility to confront the roots of violence and eliminate oppression.

Distance Learning Plan

Distance learning is most easily defined as an educational model where the student and the teacher are in locations different from one another while the instruction is taking place. The use of technology is an inherent part of the process. Technology such as computers, the Internet, televisions, telephones, and mobile phones are used to bridge the gap between teacher and student, bringing material from one to the other and back again as the learning process takes place.

Distance learning can take place synchronously, with students and teachers interacting in real time from their various locations, or more commonly asynchronously, with students and teachers communicating at different times via online message boards, forums, and email. Online learning offers students the chance to attend college courses, certificate programs, and vocational classes occurring all over the world. Courses are taught in a variety of formats: telecourses, online courses, videotaped courses, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM courses, correspondence courses, or live-interactive courses.
