The keystone of Al-Anon’s structure is the membership. The basic unit is the Al-Anon or Alateen group, which consists of two or more individuals whose lives have been adversely affected by alcoholism coming together for mutual help.

Two principle lines of communication exist between the individual group and Al-Anon as a whole:

1) the World Service Conference, directly serving Al-Anon groups in the U.S. and Canada as well as groups and structures in other countries who communicate through the International Coordination Committee.

2) the World Service Office (WSO), headquarters for the Al-Anon Family Groups, providing service information and service to groups throughout the world, and link to other national General Service Offices (GSO).

Local Al-Anon and Alateen groups comprise a district. There are 21 Al-Anon/Alateen Districts in Minnesota South Area which consists of the southernmost third of Minnesota. Districts and Areas help facilitate communication among groups, the World Service Conference, and the World Service Office.

Amberwing Center for Youth and Family Well Being – Duluth

For Children, Youth and Teens

This one-to-three week outpatient program, commonly called “partial hospitalization,” helps children, youth and adolescents who are facing serious emotional or mental health problems.

In dedicated wings of the building, youth are grouped according to their grade in school in the following programs:

Child (grades 1-5)
Middle Youth (grades 6-8)
Teen (grades 9-12)
Each day, youth participate in five hours of the best evidence-based psychotherapeutic care, as well as two hours of school. Special education teachers from Duluth public schools are available to assure students stay on track and experience seamless transitions between Amberwing and their school.

Substance Use Disorder Intervention (ages 12-18)

Effective intervention when a teen is using alcohol or other drugs requires a comprehensive, compassionate approach. As part of partial hospitalization programming, our Amberwing Teen Program Team provides group psychoeducation and individual coaching to help teens address their substance use. If a higher level of care is needed, staff are able to provide referrals to assist the teen and family.

Anthony Louis Center – Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation for Teens

Despite your best efforts, there may come a day when your teen is in need of medical intervention for drugs or alcohol. When it comes to dealing with these issues, the Anthony Louis Center understands that you need a team of specialists on your side that can be sensitive and receptive to your child. Teen drug use is a challenge for all involved, but you don’t have to lose hope.

How is Treatment for Teens Different from Adult Treatment?

During the teen years, the brain is not fully developed, meaning that teens are particularly susceptible to drug abuse and alcohol use. In truth, many teens are insulated from the full consequences of their actions because they still live at home and may not be responsible for supporting themselves.

In addition, research shows that teens prefer a different suite of drugs than adults, and even when they use the same drugs, they use them with a different intent such as seeking a fun high rather than a release from the stress of a job or relationship.

All of these factors combined mean that teen treatment involves a different approach that includes helping teens understand the real consequences on the table. It also includes helping them develop better coping strategies for the stresses they do experience.
