Everyone is invited to “Picture Recovery” during September’s National Recovery Month
“2020 has presented new challenges, especially for people seeking or sustaining recovery from substance use disorders,” said Wendy Jones, Minnesota Recovery Connection’s Executive Director. “As a way to remind people that recovery is everywhere around us, even during a pandemic, and give people options to find inspiration, we are excited to launch our ‘Picture Recovery’ initiative.”
“Sharing photos and stories that inspire hope and raise awareness is something we can all do to support recovery,” said Monique Bourgeois, Chief Community Relations Officer for NUWAY.
Addiction affects nearly everyone – as individuals, family members, friends, co-workers or community members. Yet stigma continues to be the biggest barrier to finding recovery for the 21 million Americans still struggling with substance use disorders. “As a person in long-term recovery myself,” said Jones, “It is important for the community to understand that substance use disorder is a medical condition and recovery is possible. When we normalize stories of recovery we can begin to stop dehumanizing people with the chronic disease of addiction. When we publicly celebrate and honor the recovery community, we are helping to break the
stigma that continues to harm so many Minnesotans.”
Minnesota Recovery Connection is currently accepting photo and story submissions for its “Picture Recovery” project. Photos received before August 30 will be included in a pop-up exhibit on display on the Minnesota State Capitol grounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19th. Attendance is limited and COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place. Participants must pre-register for an entry time and will be issued face coverings. In addition to submitting a photo and registering to attend the “Picture Recovery” Pop-Up Exhibit, people are invited to join a virtual “walk” across the United States and show that “Recovery Is Everywhere” with special lawn signs and a t-shirt.
