12 Step Spirituality

About Centering Prayer Meditation

  • Centering prayer meditation is very healing and will facilitate your process to spiritual awakening (Step 12)
  • It deepens your 12 Step practice through daily immersion in prayer and meditation.
  • Centering Prayer meditation is a way to deepen your relationship with your higher power.
  • It is a very simple method rooted in ancient Christian practices.

Centering Prayer can help deepen our application of the 12 Steps generally, and the 11th Step specifically, through daily immersion in prayer and meditation. We believe that, when applied as a daily supplement to the 12 Steps, Centering Prayer opens us to the deepest dimension of spirituality.

12 Step-based Recovery Yoga with Suz

Recovery is more than just abstinence. Recovery is a lifelong process of healing, transformation, and growth. Regardless of how addiction manifested in our lives, we were trapped in a cycle of spiritual disconnection, mental obsession, and physical compulsion. We emerged from active addiction beaten, wounded, and unwell, only to discover that the problem wasn’t outside; it – and the solution – is inside ourselves. 12 Step recovery programs provide a solid structure for psychological and spiritual healing, but they offer little guidance when it comes to physical healing and how to reunify the body with the mind and spirit. That is why yoga and the 12 Steps work so well together. In Recovery Yoga class, we explore how yoga offers us the awareness and the discipline that make it possible to rediscover and reconnect with all aspects of ourselves. After a brief, anonymous small-group-style check in meeting, we breathe and move our way through a sequence of postures designed to embody the spiritual principles of 12 Step recovery. From surrender in Step One through service in Step Twelve. we “work” all 12 Steps physically in one hour. This class is open to everyone and is accessible to students at all levels of practice and stages of recovery.

What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a form of psychotherapy incorporating a mental health professional, an equine specialist, and horses. EAP has proven to have a profound impact on individuals, couples, families, and groups. It addresses a variety of mental health needs including chemical dependency, depression, grief and loss, eating disorders, anxiety, communication issues, attention deficit disorders, autism spectrum disorder, emotional and behavioral issues, and relationship challenges.

Why is this beneficial?
This therapeutic approach assists clients in reconnecting with their emotions and owning their feelings.  In a safe environment, clients are provided an opportunity to step into an experience that will help facilitate their ability to ‘see’ their behaviors and how those behaviors impact self and others. All activities are completed on the ground.  No horseback riding or knowledge of horses required.

Adult Children of Alcoholics – World Service Organization

Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA)/Dysfunctional Families is a Twelve StepTwelve Tradition program of men and women who grew up in dysfunctional homes.

We meet to share our experience of growing up in an environment where abuse, neglect and trauma infected us. This affects us today and influences how we deal with all aspects of our lives.

ACA provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment that allows us to grieve our childhoods and conduct an honest inventory of ourselves and our family—so we may (i) identify and heal core trauma, (ii) experience freedom from shame and abandonment, and (iii) become our own loving parents.

Two principle lines of communication exist between the individual group and Al-Anon as a whole:

1) the World Service Conference, directly serving Al-Anon groups in the U.S. and Canada as well as groups and structures in other countries who communicate through the International Coordination Committee.

2) the World Service Office (WSO), headquarters for the Al-Anon Family Groups, providing service information and service to groups throughout the world, and link to other national General Service Offices (GSO).

Local Al-Anon and Alateen groups comprise a district. There are 21 Al-Anon/Alateen Districts in Minnesota South Area which consists of the southernmost third of Minnesota. Districts and Areas help facilitate communication among groups, the World Service Conference, and the World Service Office.

Amberwing Center for Youth and Family Well Being – Duluth

For Children, Youth and Teens

This one-to-three week outpatient program, commonly called “partial hospitalization,” helps children, youth and adolescents who are facing serious emotional or mental health problems.

In dedicated wings of the building, youth are grouped according to their grade in school in the following programs:

Child (grades 1-5)
Middle Youth (grades 6-8)
Teen (grades 9-12)
Each day, youth participate in five hours of the best evidence-based psychotherapeutic care, as well as two hours of school. Special education teachers from Duluth public schools are available to assure students stay on track and experience seamless transitions between Amberwing and their school.

Substance Use Disorder Intervention (ages 12-18)

Effective intervention when a teen is using alcohol or other drugs requires a comprehensive, compassionate approach. As part of partial hospitalization programming, our Amberwing Teen Program Team provides group psychoeducation and individual coaching to help teens address their substance use. If a higher level of care is needed, staff are able to provide referrals to assist the teen and family.

At ARS, we prepare and inspire starters and operators of Recovery High Schools to perform at their very best. We believe that while addiction thrives in isolation, recovery is a process of hope and healing that thrives in the positive peer communities of recovery schools.

Connected through principles, disciplines and tools that set the gold standard for educating and supporting students in recovery, we collaborate with a broad and diverse global network to advocate for a continuum of support and a readiness for student transition in and out of Recovery High Schools. We provide deep expertise, resources and data-driven best practices to Recovery High Schools through training, consulting and accreditation services, while serving as advocates for the educational inclusion of youth recovery. We believe that every student in recovery is of value and worthy of an opportunity to be educated so they can heal, grow and ultimately discover how to live their very best life

EQUINE THERAPY

We entrust horses to show us the way back to health. Work and observation in the horse world lends itself to extremely powerful metaphors into our own patterns, strengths, and nonverbal messages we send out.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) & Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL)

Equine-assisted work honors the natural behavior of horses and herds. Horses are skilled at keeping themselves safe and are adept at survival. Their natural behaviors are optimal for mental and physical health. In many respects, we as humans have lost the instinct to keep ourselves safe and healthy. We entrust horses to show us the way back to health. Work and observation in the horse world lends itself to extremely powerful metaphors into our own patterns, strengths, and nonverbal messages we send out.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) implements the power of equine-assisted philosophies and exercises to introduce therapy clients to themselves in a morality that has been found to be more efficient and less threatening than traditional talk therapy.

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is a field of practice based on the successes of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). We have learned that everyone can benefit from equine-assisted work – not just therapy clients. Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) uses equine-assisted philosophies and exercises in a variety of arenas including parenting and family dynamics, personal coaching, church groups, corporate retreats, and more.

EAP and EAL can help with emotional and behavioral issues, anger management, marriage and relationship issues, abuse and addiction, mental health issues including PTSD, and more. We also work with special needs children and kids that are just going through a tough time.
