Recovery is more than just abstinence. Recovery is a lifelong process of healing, transformation, and growth. Regardless of how addiction manifested in our lives, we were trapped in a cycle of spiritual disconnection, mental obsession, and physical compulsion. We emerged from active addiction beaten, wounded, and unwell, only to discover that the problem wasn’t outside; it – and the solution – is inside ourselves. 12 Step recovery programs provide a solid structure for psychological and spiritual healing, but they offer little guidance when it comes to physical healing and how to reunify the body with the mind and spirit. That is why yoga and the 12 Steps work so well together. In Recovery Yoga class, we explore how yoga offers us the awareness and the discipline that make it possible to rediscover and reconnect with all aspects of ourselves. After a brief, anonymous small-group-style check in meeting, we breathe and move our way through a sequence of postures designed to embody the spiritual principles of 12 Step recovery. From surrender in Step One through service in Step Twelve. we “work” all 12 Steps physically in one hour. This class is open to everyone and is accessible to students at all levels of practice and stages of recovery.
